La Vela Puerca, created in 1995, is, with his leader Sebastian Teysera, the most important ska-rock band from Uruguay.
The album De Bichos y Flores was edited in Montevideo in october 2001. Jazz, murga, candombe, ska, reggae, rock and punk are mixed, but those two last are more present in this album than it could be present in the 1st one, "Deskarado". Which is not unpleasant at all.
The songs are all differents, all with latin accent, and all giving a different impression, even if the framework brass Ska song with saturated guitar and binary drums punk refrain is very often followed. It gives great songs like "El Viejo", "El Profeta", "Por la Ciudad" or "Burbujas". Some songs are a bit more punky, but great as well, for example "El Huracan", "De no Olvidar", "Mañana" or "El ojo moro". Peaceful songs are presents too, "Contradecir" is a good example. The candombe song "Potosi" (about the eponymic bolivian town) and the murga song "José sabia" have a folk side, inspirated by the latino-american traditional songs.
It is A Musically interesting album, furnishing a lot of energy and able to cheer you up. The songs have good lyrics too, very diverse. Some songs are critics of the society, some others are more sentimental, others more tragic... I precise that most of the lyrics are still more or less negative and not really optimistic.
It is hard to get bored of this album, however you have to like the style.I'm used to listen to it when I can't find anything else, and it is always fresh.
